#39 Rome Part 1 Test Corrections!

Friday in Western Civilization, we got in and took attendance and then we started getting the tests back, and unfortunately a lot of people failed. L I got a 76, which is passing, but still could’ve been much better! Then, after that we started going over it out loud and Mr. Schick said that there wasn’t one question that everyone got right even though the last one was asking what teacher/rapper sings “Rome”. The answer was obviously “Chi-Cago” and people didn’t pay attention. I’m sure someone had to put option A, which was “Mr. Schick”. I have a 90 in West Civ so I’m not too worried because I did pass and do all of my blogs! Once we finished going over the test and explaining everything, Mr. Schick asked us what we think he should do to get more people involved and Parker and I both said that he should give bigger punishments to people who are talking and people who are on there laptops when they shouldn’t be, during note taking time. I take so many notes handwritten that I don’t think it’s fair for people to just goof off on their computers and I know people do because they ask me to send them the notes! Hopefully this works and everyone starts getting better grades! J

#38 Quest Results and Assembly!

Today in Western Civilization, we took a “quest”. On LO-1, LO-2 and the Rome rap form the beginning all the way to right before the Gracchus Brothers and then we stopped. I have the song memorized and I highlighted and read so I think I did pretty well. The only thing I didn’t really know at all was who ruled what government. I don’t know why I didn’t know that but I didn’t. The other ones were fine though. We weren’t allowed to use our blogs so it all had to come out of memory, and hopefully I did okay! I already read pages 97-101 in class so now I have no homework! West Civ was our first class this morning and then we had the assembly. At the assembly we got our awards and honor certificates. In the third quarter I got all A’s but for some reason still got second honors, and some of them were high A’s. I know other people who got all low A’s and still made first. I’m disappointed because I tried so hard for first, but it happens. Mr. Perry and Mrs. Murphy Don told me to email Mrs. Cathell and I just did that explaining everything so hopefully we can get it worked out J

Quest Tommorow and Confirmation!

Today in Western Civilization after taking attendance, we kept going on the rap. We took notes and talked in detail about how when the rich people bought land from the poor as a favor because they couldn’t pay it off, they lived in the latifundia and got richer by not having to pay the slaves much to farm on their land and get food. Tomorrow we have a “quest” (half quiz, half test) with 25 multiple choice questions about the first part of the rap all the way to the Gracchus Brothers. I got confirmed tonight and it started at 6:30 but we didn’t get out until about 10 because the Bishop (Bishop Madden) really liked to talk! So after eating dinner and showering and everything like that, I finally started my homework at 11:15 and didn’t get much time at all to study. I know all of the first words of the rap though, so hopefully that will help me! J

#36 Watching the Rome Rap Videos!

Today in Western Civilization after we went in and took attendance, we started watching the extra credit videos. They were like music videos for the Rome rap by Chi Cago. Mr. Schick let us watch them and then give them a grade out of ten. The first group was Victoria and Abby, and theirs was really good so we gave it a ten! Then was Tim and Sean’s and theirs was great too so it also go a ten. After that, Harry and William went and they got a 5 because they didn’t finish, but if they did, they would have gotten a ten! And last but not least, Alex went and got a 10. I liked watching the videos but now I’m a little tired of that song because I’ve heard it SO much between making my video and watching everyone else’s! Once we finished that we started on breaking down the Rome rap lyrics and we talked about the crucifixion and the Punic wars. They were Rome vs. Carthage, and Rome won every time. We ended just about there and it was a good class! J

#35 Our Rap Bonus Presentation!

Today in Western Civilization, we went in, took attendance and the n Katie got to wear the birthday hat because her birthday was Tuesday and we didn’t have his class that day, then it was Victoria’s birthday Wednesday and she wore it. So, Katie got it Thursday! After that, Mr. Schick gave us a few minutes to talk and work on our music picture videos for the rap if we wanted while he fixed something. He also changed the final idea for the videos, he was going to grade it as a real grade but then he realized that not everyone already had iTunes and it didn’t download that easily for everyone. He said now it’s just 10 points of extra credit! After he adds that, I should have a 97 in the class! Katie and I also got to present our video for the whole class and it was embarrassing but really funny and Mr. Schick loved it! Now, I just need to find out how to send him the link and I’ll be good! J After we presented the rap, we started taking notes on what exactly it means line for line and breaking it down for the test!!!

Rome Lyrics!

Well, you got the Etruscans and the Greeks
But the Latins came first
To the shores of the River Tiber
They drained a swamp (They drained a swamp)
Next thing you know
Livin’ in Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
Now Tarquin’s kinda proud
But he got a little loud (little loud)
They turned around and ran that tyrant outta town (hey!)
Next thing you know (next thing you know)
No kings no more
Happened in Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome

Hey, we got three governments rolled into one
Patricians and plebeians havin’ some fun
Two consuls gotta be better than one
Brand new republic ready to run
Democracy
Aristocracy
Plus monarchy
Not a tyranny
Ho-o-o-old up wait a minute, do I see what I think I… hey!
That’s a Roman legion clear as day
5000 soldiers not in it for pay
Group of eighty’s a century
On horseback is the cavalry
Shield, sword, dagger, and armor and tunic
Fightin ’gainst Carthage in wars that are Punic
Hannibal riding on elephant back
Crossing the Alps just to launch his attack

So now you get the picture (picture)
All the rich are getting richer (richer)
And they’re livin’ on the latifundia
Farmers can’t cope (They just can’t cope)
They’re low on hope
They moved to Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
I can hear the brothers Gracchus
Sayin, “Rich, please don’t attack us” (don’t attack us)
“We got a feeling that the senators will whack us” (hey!)
They hit the floor (they hit the floor)
Next thing you know
It’s civil war, war, war, war, war, war, war, war

Hey, let me take you back to 60 BC
It’s the start of the rise of Julius C
He grabbed two dudes and he formed a team
It’s a triumvirate -- that’s a group of three
“Crassus (come on), Pompey (come on), I’m JC! (come on)
We three will rule!
What you think I'm playin, baby girl?  I'm the man!
I'm conquering Gaul!”
All of his soldiers gave him their devotion
That’s why he swept over Gaul just like an ocean
Pompey couldn’t understand all the commotion
When he crossed the Rubicon, he kept up motion
It’s just like a potion
Caesar had self-locomotion
Power’s an ambitious emotion
Dictator is not a demotion
It’s promotion

But in 44 BC (BC)
On a day called March 15 (Ides of March)
Brutus and the Senate murdered Julius C
He hit the floor (he hit the floor)
Next thing you know
Caesar’s no more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more
You know he’s so depressed
23 stab wounds in his chest (in his chest)
He saw his friend and he raised one last protest (hey!)
Et tu, Brute?” (Et tu, Brute?)
That’s what he say
Cuz he felt low, low, low, low, low, low, low, low

Only eighteen, Octavian makin’ the scene
He says, “I tell you what,
Got a new triumvirate
Here’s my boy Lepidus
And Mark Antony I trust”
(‘Til Marky met this chick
Cleopatra from Egypt)
Octavian was freakin’
Lust for power started peakin’
“Don’t try to play me or my navy,
At Actium you won’t slay me”
“O” won that game
Did explain
Now Augustus was his name
All his subjects did proclaim
He’s in the Roman Hall of Fame

Twenty-seven BC (BC)
For a couple hundred years (207)
Pax Romana is the word that brings the cheers (Yay!)
They’re on a roll (they’re on a roll)
They built some roads
Leading to Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
Slaves don’t have many rights and
Then there’s gladiator fightin’ (OW!)
People find the Circus Maximus excitin’ (hey!)
Blood on the floor (knee-deep in gore)
And now you know
All about Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome
(C'mon!)

#34 Katie and My Rap!

Today in Western Civilization, we started class and as soon as we started we had a fire drill. We had to walk to walk outside kind of in the front of the school by the entrance and I’ve never been that way before so it was weird but it worked out. We just had to stand in the parking lot and it got really cold after a while. After we got back we started working on a new project where we take Mr. Schick’s rap and put pictures with it. Then we played Katie and me rapping in front of the whole class and it was angelic. It was so beautiful I don’t know how I would have made it through the day without seeing that. Katie, Anna, and I’s project, were going to try to put pictures in the middle of our video! I hope it turns out really good and we get a good grade! J
